ARTICLES FROM  |  Dean

Dean

Br John Furlong

The year has been a rewarding one and once again I have had a wonderful group of young people to guide through their role as House Coordinators. These more senior students run the College and guide the new students and some of the older ones through the year and their life in College.

Our residential Academic Tutors are running regular tutorials and are available to give individual assistance. These tutorials cover a wide range of faculties and subjects.

In the Academic Panels the first year students are interviewed by the Head of College, the Dean and two College Council members, once in first term - once in third term. The basic aim of these interviews is to find ways of helping the individual students and improving the academic programme and life in general at Aquinas. As a result of those interviews a considerable number of additional tutorials and one to one sessions of assistance are put in place.

In the Progressive Review Panels all students from Second Year and above are interviewed by the Head of College, the Dean and a former student in the third term. The purpose of these interviews is to review the first term results as well as seeking out ways of helping students and finding ways of improving the College.

The Lawrie Smart Shield is a sporting competition run between the Houses. Two or three events such as indoor soccer, chess and table tennis are run each term. The favourites to take out the title this year are Upper Beovich. The last rounds could witness some eager contests as the competitive streaks of the House Coordinators and their House members come to the fore.

The College Music Night was held on the second Friday in May. On that night a vast array of talent in both classical and popular music was on display. On the last Wednesday in August we are holding an entertaining Drama Night. These nights give the students and most of the staff the opportunity to show their skills.
