Student Club President 2009
Kale McBain 2009 Student Club President
At the beginning of 2009 Aquinas College welcomed 84 eager new students to join their 80 returning students to make up the student body for the academic year. The year started promisingly with a camp for student club executives and House Coordinators to improve their relationships to ensure the student leadership group could provide the incoming students, along with the returning students every possibility to get as much as possible from a year that could promise so much.
The college year started long before the academic year with the now annual Tour Down Under function held during the last stage of the Tour Down Under bicycle race. The function had over 25 students return to offer their time to volunteer and raise money to pay for a new bathroom in Lower Hannon. The students year started with O'Week and an opportunity for new students to get to know each other and provided returning students a chance to catch up on the three months holiday as well as reminisce about a successful 2008 college year. After a tireless week of preparation the student club was ready to welcome all students to Aquinas for what was promising to be a fantastic year. O'Week was set to be enjoyable with Double-Blues, a quiz night and a mystery bus tour later in the week. The end of O'Week was supposed to see college quiet down for a while but for the Student Club it was not so. Adelaide Cup was quickly approaching and the student club organized the usual tent for students and the Adelaide Cup function went off with no problems. The day was a huge success and saw the Student Club begin to raise money to put back into the student body. Shortly into term one a female fitness program was set up giving the females an opportunity to use the gym at college. Not long after the start of the fitness program for girls a male fitness program was set up as well. Term two began with Aquinas's Open Show or better known as Pond Show. The theme "Top of the Pops" gave all those attending a chance to recreate their favourite albums through costume. Term two finished up with exams and saw many of our students receive great marks.
The holidays passed by rapidly but also provided an opportunity for four of our students to represent the college and student club at the National Association of Australian University Colleges conference in Sydney. Several of our students also attended a Toc-H camp for under privileged kids as camp leaders to provide a holiday for kids that would otherwise spend their holidays sitting at home watching TV. Over the holidays the Student Club helped purchase a new 60 inch TV for the general common room and helped push for an overhaul of the current washing machines to change to free machines which should be in place within the next few weeks. The holidays also saw a new bike shed built and the last of our car park paved.
When the holidays finished we welcomed eight new students into the student body including six international students. Re-O'Week included another quiz and a trip for students to Mount Thebarton to test out their ice skating skills. The week finished with the annual Aquinas Ball and Dinner. The Ball was held at Higher Ground and was a fantastic night conducted by the ball committee who put a tireless amount of work into the night to ensure everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The half way point of the college year has seen the majority of students complete their 10 hours community service with some students completing in excess of 60 hours community service.
Sport has always been a big part of the Aquinas Culture and 2009 to date has been no different. The sporting calendar has seen Aquinas win several sports in both the men's and women's arenas and hopefully continues right through to October 18 when the High Table Cup will be decided. Sport has seen many different collegians compete but has also seen the majority of the student body attend the sports to support their fellow collegians in their endeavour to do well in the High Table Cup.
The rest of the college year has much to offer current students. With exec dinner, drama night, a second music night and Valate still to come the students are sure to enjoy themselves right through to the end of the year.
