House Coordinators 2009
David Segui, Alison Callahan (Senior House Coordinators)
2009 has seen the addition of Marcellin House bringing with it a new house coordinator. This increase from the traditional number of seven to eight House Coordinators means extra and improved input towards the increased development of College.
The 2009 team began training eagerly in early December when they participated in three days of intensive workshops. This new idea proved to be very valuable to the success of the House Coordinator group and provided a nice introduction into the yearly Pt Elliot camp in February. Here we looked over our previously nominated goals for the year and decided how to implement them into the college.
This year has seen a change in the role of the House Coordinator group playing a more active role in the running of the day to day college life. We have worked on improving our relationships within members of the college community specifically with the Student Club and amongst ourselves.
Lawrie Smart Shield continues to attract plenty of support within the college community due to recent innovations such as compulsory house T-Shirts, music and entertainment while the sport is being played and supper available after the sport is finished. The regular inter-house sports events provide a fun way for each house to bond specifically with its members while engaged in a competitive but friendly rivalry with the other houses throughout the year.
The Community Service program has now been running for three years. We have tried to improve it by providing each house with its own group opportunities for community service so that we can support each other in getting our compulsory ten hours. It has proved to be a challenging task to get people to complete the CS hours but the new innovation of group activities has seen a positive response from the college community.
With the addition of the Marcellin house extra rooms have become available resulting in an increase in college numbers to the largest they have ever been at 164 students. Despite this increase in numbers Aquinas has still managed to maintain very high academic results with several people gaining straight high distinctions.
Aquinas in 2009 has also seen the best first half to the sporting year in a long time with the best sporting results since the High Table Cup victories of the late 90's. Hopefully this winning form can continue into the second half of the year with the end result being the return of the High Table Cup back to its rightful place on the top of Montefiore Hill!
