Researcher
in Wheat Breeding
Plant breeding allows you to keep your fingers in lots of pies,
liaising and working with researchers, agronomists, farmers and manufacturers
across Australia. I am currently working for farmers through research for
my PhD in Wheat Breeding.
I grew up on dairy farms and agriculture has always been
a major part of my life. I developed a keen interest in biology, particularly
the biological systems influencing the productivity of our farm and in high
school I chose subjects like biology, chemistry, maths, geography and agriculture
to prepare me for a career in agricultural science.
I reached my current position by studying at Adelaide University for a Bachelor
of Agricultural Science. I majored in genetics and biochemistry, doing Honours
in Animal Science, but after doing a couple of plant breeding subjects in
my final year I realised that I would prefer to work in that field. The
great thing about agricultural science is that there are plenty of jobs
out there, we get to use the latest techniques, and we are directly helping
Australias performance on international markets.
Science brings improved opportunity to agriculture. I am using some
of the latest technologies in genetics to help develop new varieties of
plants to improve farm productivity that will, in turn, generate benefits
for entire communities.
