Consultant to the Dairy Industry
During my secondary schooling I developed an interest in Agriculture and decided to pursue a career in the agriculture industry. After completing year 12 I was accepted into the Bachelor of Agriculture degree at the University of Adelaide on the Roseworthy Campus, where graduated from my degree in 2000, and was then accepted into the 2001 Honours program.

I commenced Honours study focusing on dairy nutrition as I had developed a keen interest in the dairy industry whilst studying at Roseworthy. My project aimed to determine the effect of feeding readily available carbohydrate sources to dairy cows of various stages of lactation in the form of lolly waste, molasses and additional grain to the diet. Milk yield, milk components (such as fat and protein), rumen function, hay intake, body weight, condition score, blood pH, glucose and urea, and urine pH and urea were all measured and analysed to identify the different results from different sources.

While studying at Roseworthy I also participated at the Royal Show with the Dairy Team and through that experience and my study I had a job offer while I was still doing my project. It’s a good job with good conditions working in the dairy industry classifying dairy cows for the Holstein Friesian Association of Australia and it involves travelling around the country to evaluate dairy cows for the Association.

My Honours year has extended my knowledge of dairy cows and it’s also given me a competitive edge in my career and job prospects. It’s been hard work but it’s also been a lot of fun and I’ve made lots of friends and good contacts along the way.
