Making food and wine
If food and wine appeal to you then consider the huge range of options in these industries for a career. Australians produce and enjoy some of the best quality food in the world and our winemakers are internationally renowned. But farms and wineries aren’t the only options. To compete on the international market we have to have a smart industry that meets international standards for quality and safety. Top business skills are needed as well as in-depth scientific knowledge.

In the wine industry you can specialise in oenology, focusing on the scientific principles controlling wine production and grape production for wine making, or in viticulture, focusing on the factors controlling grapevine performance and the technology of grape production for wine or products such as table or dried grapes.

The growing global market in food products means management of quality and safety are essential to success. Figuring out what consumers want and how to produce new, exciting, convenient and wholesome products for consumers in the new century is what this industry is concentrating on, so if you’ve ever dreamed of inventing the next great snack food or cola drink to take the world by storm, then think about working in research and product development in the food industry.

Jobs – what and where?
The food and beverage manufacturing industry in Australia is reporting a strong demand for employees trained in food processing and product development for local, national and international food processors.

Australian winemakers are enjoying a great demand for their services both in Australia and overseas. With experience, you could join the ranks of the ‘flying winemakers’ who manage vintages in Australia in the late summer and then travel over the equator to do the same in the northern hemisphere in a single year. You could work in research or choose to specialise in malting and brewing for beer production.
