Horticulture
Horticulture focuses on the commercial cultivation and production of fruits, vegetables and flowers. That includes grapes, berries, nuts and ornamental native plants too. Australian produce enjoys a great reputation at home and overseas as ‘clean and green’, so working in this industry means knowing all about sustainable land management and ecology.

Jobs – what and where?
The range of jobs in this sector is large and they aren’t just based in the country. In many parts of Australia there are vineyards and vegetable farms very close to major cities. A job in research in this field could mean working on the development of new varieties for national and international markets or finding out the best ways to handle a fruit, vegetable or flower after picking to make sure it gets to the consumer in top condition. Or you can work as adviser or consultant to producers either independently or on behalf of a government department or industry body.
