Pest management
What’s a pest? It can be anything – an insect, an animal, a disease or even a plant. The term pest really means any organism that can cause damage to a crop or a natural ecosystem.

Pest control in the 21st century is a highly skilled activity applying the principles of ecology to the management of pests. Managing pests this way also means finding better methods of control without relying on the use of synthetic chemicals.

Jobs – what and where?
In Australia the demand for graduates with qualifications in integrated pest management, or IPM as it’s known, is high and so far there are few of them. That means excellent employment opportunities for new graduates. Work in this field could be for a horticultural or agricultural producer or as a consultant to producers working for an industry or government body and you could be based in the city or in a regional area. A career in this field is a particularly good opportunity for those seeking to return home to work in a rural region after completing their studies.
