The Work/Life Collision

The panel participants will be:

Senator Natasha Stott Despoja has been a South Australian Senator since November 1995 and is the youngest woman ever to enter the Australian Federal Parliament. She is a former Leader and Deputy Leader of the Australian Democrats. Senator Stott Despoja’s current portfolio responsibilities include Work and Family, Status of Women, Foreign Affairs, Higher Education, Science and Biotechnology and Republic.

Associate Professor Barbara Pocock is a Research Fellow at the University of Adelaide in the School of Social Sciences. She has been doing research about work, gender, unionism, and work and family in Australia for over twenty years. In 2003 Barbara published The Work/Life Collision (Federation Press). Her book gives a name to the stress and strains facing many working parents. In the panel Barbara will elucidate some of her key findings and provide the background for our discussion.

Senator Penny Wong is Labor Senator for South Australia. She was elected to the Senate in 2001 and her term of office began 1 July 2002. She comes from a union and legal background and will provide her views on this vital topic of debate.

Janet Giles is the first woman secretary of the United Trades and Labor Council, which is the peak body representing unions in South Australia. Previously she led the SA branch of the Australian Education Union and has been actively involved in campaigning for public education, women and social justice over many years. Janet is married with two children who are now 13 and 16 and so has personally experienced the challenges facing women in public life who also have family responsibilities. She is a strong advocate for the need for work and family to be recognised as the serious public policy issue that it is.

Carol Bacchi (Chair) is Associate Professor of Politics, University of Adelaide. She has been writing in the area of women and policy for a number of years. Most recently she published Fear of Food: A Diary of Mothering (Spinifex 2003), describing some of the challenges she faced in negotiating a work/life balance.

Attendance: All welcome.
When: 2.00-3.30pm, Friday 1 October .
Where: Napier Building, 2nd Floor, Room 205, The University of Adelaide.

Election Forum: Campaign 2004

The Forum will attempt to provoke participants to reflect on aspects of the campaign – the pressures, constraints, challenges, dramas – beyond (beneath, behind) the media election coverage and commentary regularly projected to various audiences. Who are the technicians, software engineers, number crunchers, statisticians and so forth that enable the on-air media to produce those dazzling graphics and vote projections? How big of a job is it to manage all that, and how is it likely to change in the future? Do we have the sense that anything political scientists teach at our universities actually prepares people to do these things? Does our research have any impact on how campaigns are actually conducted and mediated?

Confirmed Participants:

Professor Dean Jaensch, Flinders University
Professor John Warhurst, Australian National University
Professor Elaine Thompson, University of New South Wales
Dr John Roskam, University of Melbourne
Mr Christian Kerr, Columnist, crikey.com.au

Attendance: All welcome.
When: 4:00-5:30pm, Thursday 30 September .
Where: Napier Building, 1st Floor, Lecture Theatre 102, The University of Adelaide.
