Who Should Enrol?

This qualification will appeal to those who wish to become qualified Arbitrators and others who are interested in the subject matter to achieve a thorough grounding in the key principles of arbitration. These principles provide a useful framework for dealing with disputes in a broad range of situations.

The Professional Certificate in Arbitration will appeal to highly motivated people in two main categories:

  • Those in professional practice who are likely to be sought after to provide expert advice and services as Arbitrators, and providers of other forms of ADR
  • Those who are interested in gaining skills and knowledge of dispute resolution procedures to enhance their business and professional knowledge and practices

This Award qualification will be attractive to a diverse range of applicants including accountants, administrators, architects, engineers, doctors, dentists, lawyers, health professionals, surveyors and valuers, and people involved in the construction, building, finance, insurance, mining and real estate industries. Participants are drawn from both the public and private sectors.

Entry is competitive and applicants will be considered on merit. The Professional Certificate in Arbitration is designed primarily for tertiary graduates, while mature non-degree applicants will be admitted on the basis of their recognised expertise and success in relevant employment, professional experience, trade or associated qualification.

Students who successfully complete the Professional Certificate shall be invited to attend a formal graduation ceremony at The University of Adelaide to receive their Award qualification.

 

Admission Requirements  

The Professional Certificate in Arbitration is designed for tertiary graduates (degree or diploma), while mature non-degree applicants will be admitted on the basis of their recognised expertise and experience.   

The qualifications which would allow admission to the Professional Certificate Course include any of the following: 

  1. a recognised university degree plus 2 years practice in relevant field
  2. diploma or other tertiary qualification (University or TAFE) plus at least 3 years practice in relevant field
  3. a recognised industry-based qualification (eg: training in business management through the Institute of Management) plus at least 4 years experience holding a senior and responsible position within business/industry
  4. at least 5 years experience holding a senior position in a field of practice or discipline

International Applicants

International students are eligible to undertake this course online provided they have met the program’s admission requirements and the University of Adelaide’s English language proficiency requirements. 

However it should be noted that the program is particularly focused on arbitration practice in Australia.  

The University of Adelaide requires all international students to meet a standard of English Language proficiency.   For programs in the Law School, providing documentation on any of the following can satisfy proof of English language proficiency: 

  • IELTS - Overall band score of 7.0 with a minimum band score of 7.0 in Writing and Speaking and 6.5 in Reading and Listening.
  • TOEFL – Score of at least 600 with a minimum score of 5.0 in TWE.
  • Computer-based TOEFL – Score of at least 250 with a minimum score of 5.0 in Essay Rating

If your application is successful, you will be sent an enrolment package (which includes a username and password) and you will be required to complete your enrolment online via Access Adelaide. Access Adelaide is a web-based system that allows you to view and amend your university record line.

Fees

General Course 2008

  • $2,399 for members of The Institute of Arbitrators and Mediators Australia
  • $2,499 for non members

Advanced Course 2008

  • $2,549 for members of The Institute of Arbitrators and Mediators Australia
  • $2,649 for non members
