Academic Women's Promotion Workshop - Friday 2 MarchThe Academic Women’s Promotion Forum is an annual event intended to encourage academic women to apply for promotion. In response to feedback from previous years there will be two sessions run in 2007. The focus of the sessions is to provide women with practical and strategic advice and information on preparing and writing a promotion application - whether they are applying in 2007 or in the future. This first session is an informal workshop - there will be guest speakers who will provide information on key requirements of the Promotions Policy and a panel of academic women who have experienced the promotions process. UNIFEM International Women's Day Breakfast - 8 March 2007Academic women are warmly invited to attend the annual UNIFEM International Women's Day Breakfast with staff from the University of Adelaide, including the Vice Chancellor and women from the Women's Professional Development Network (WPDN) on Thursday 8 March 2007. The speaker will be Professor Larissa Behrendt, Professor of Law and Indigenous Studies and Director of the Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning at the University of Technology, Sydney. AWF lunchtime Meeting - Friday 23 March - updated changed dateThe first lunchtime meeting of the AWF for 2007 will be held in the Moot Court Room in the Ligertwood Building on Friday 23 March from 12.00-1.00pm. These meetings provide the opportunity for information sharing and networking. An agenda for the meeting is available here. Please 'pack a lunch' and bring someone new to the meeting. _________________________________________________________top^Career Development Event - "Forging a Research Career When the Going Gets Tough!" - Tuesday 16 OctoberHealthy Development Adelaide (HDA), Healthy Ageing Research Cluster (HARC) & Computational Neuroscience Research Cluster (CNRC) will be holding a Career Development Event - "Forging a Research Career When the Going Gets Tough!" - the event will be held at 9.45 a.m. - 1.00 p.m. at State Library Lecture Theatre. The event will include presentations and a panel discussion by senior academics and researchers who have successfully navigated research career challenges in their chosen field. Topics will cover the worklife balance, being a woman in science and family issues, career interruption and illness, career change, and developing an independent research career. The event is open to all three Universities and ideal for postgraduate students and early-mid career researchers to gain expert advice in career development. See flyer for the detailed program. _________________________________________________________top^ AWF afternoon networking meeting - Wednesday 24 OctoberThe AWF afternoon meeting will be held in the Ira Raymond Room on Wednesday 24 October from 4.00 - 5.00pm. These meetings provide the opportunity for information sharing and networking. An agenda for the meeting will be made available closer to the time. _________________________________________________________top^ Professional development activity - Friday 2 NovemberFunding has been provided to the AWF to run a professional development session for academic women similar to the Professional Development Seminar: Women and Workplace Negotiation that was run in 2006. Based on feedback provided by academic women the proposed professional development session will cover aspects of negotiating collegial relationships and managing conflict. Further feedback on potential professional development activities is welcome - this session may be modified if there is significant interest in an alternative topic. The session will be held on Friday 2 November from 9.00am to 1.00pm in the Ira Raymond Room. Further information about this professional development activity will be provided closer to the time. _________________________________________________________top^New ConvenorThe new Convenor of the Academic Women's Forum is Professor Martha Augoustinos. Martha is a social psychologist and has published extensively in the area of racist discourse and on critical discursive methods in psychology. Martha is also part of the project team that will conduct the 'Women in Research Project'. The AWF acknowledges and thanks Professor Chilla Bulbeck for her hard work and dedication as Convenor of the AWF from 2000 to 2006 and the work of Professor Margaret Allen and Dr Suzanne Hunt who also stepped in as Acting Convenors during that time. _________________________________________________________top^ End of Year CelebrationThe annual AWF End of Year Celebration at Waite Campus was a successful and enjoyable event. _________________________________________________________top^ 2006 AWF End of Year CelebrationThe AWF invites academic women at the University of Adelaide to attend the AWF End of Year Celebration to be held on Monday 11 December 2006. This annual event provides an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of AWF during the year, look to some of the activities planned for the following year and and relax with colleagues over refreshments in the beautiful surrounds of Urrbrae House. During the afternoon there will be informal updates on AWF activities. Event Details
'Women in Research' ProjectUpdate - 14 November 2006The application period is now closed and the Chief Investigator for the Project will announced at the AWF End of Year Event. BackgroundThe Vice Chancellor allocated $36,500 from his discretionary fund to conduct research on the structural impediments to maximizing the research output of academic women at this university, particularly in the context of the RQF framework. The final report from the project will include recommendations for enhancing academic women’s research outcomes. The project is summarised below, and the full funding application is available here. Project summaryThe project should be completed, culminating in a report with recommendations for change submitted to University management, by November 2007.The project includes $20,000 teaching relief for the chief investigator(s). In addition to completing the project, AWF asks the chief investigator(s) to undertake the following two related tasks:
Senior colleagues among the AWF membership are encouraged to apply in conjunction with a junior colleague, thus providing research mentoring to a junior colleague in relation to funded research project management. The distribution of the teaching relief will be at the discretion of the team of CIs. The selection of the CI will be made by Chilla Bulbeck and another co-opted member of AWF (who has not applied to be CI for the project) with the Equity Project Officer providing administrative support. If you wish to discuss the project, please contact Chilla Bulbeck _________________________________________________________top^Professional Development Seminar: Women and Workplace NegotiationThe AWF is sponsoring a professional development seminar on workplace negotiation specifically for women working in the higher education sector. The seminar will be held on Friday 3 November 2006. About the sessionProfessor Mara Olekalns will lead a half day seminar aimed at developing essential negotiation skills, taking into consideration differences in how men and women prepare for and manage their negotiations. The aim of this session is to equip attendees with a set of tools for improving their negotiation outcomes and for reframing negotiation processes from competition to collaboration and problem-solving. About the speakerMara Olekalns Professor of Management (Negotiations) at the Melbourne Business School, University of Melbourne, where she teaches Negotiation Processes and Strategies. Professor Mara Olekalns’ expertise is within the fields of negotiation and conflict resolution. Her research focuses on communication processes in negotiation and examines trust, emotion and communication in negotiation and dispute resolution. In addition to her role at MBS, Mara has been a Visiting Research Scholar at Kellogg Graduate School of Management’s Dispute Resolution Research Centre. She is a past Board member of the International Association of Conflict Management and on the editorial board of the Association's newly established journal, Negotiation and Conflict Management Research, as well as on the editorial boards of Group Decision and Negotiation, and Journal of Organizational Behavior. Women in Research ForumThe AWF will host a Women in Research Forum: 'Dark tunnels and bright lights: University of Adelaide's women researchers' on Monday 9 October 2006. Bright lightsThe 'bright lights' session will showcase the research of four nationally and internationally recognised women researchers, both early career and established. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, Professor Alan Johnson, will open the session and the speakers will include:
Dark TunnelsLed by a facilitator, the second 'dark tunnels' session will incorporate a discussion of the impediments and supports to research for women - with the view to collecting data that will assist in strengthening and developing support mechanisms for researchers in the University. Academic Women's Promotion Forum 2006The Academic Women's Promotion Forum is an annual event designed to encourage and support academic women in applying for promotion. The Forums were started by the AWF and are now organised by the Equity Project Officer. The focus of the 2006 Forum is on providing women with practical and strategic advice on preparing for promotion. There will be information for women who want to apply for Level B-E in 2006 and those who are preparing for promotion in the future. You will have an opportunity to ask questions and seek advice from a panel of experienced applicants from all academic levels. Event Details
New Convenor for semester 1, 2006Suzanne Hunt from the Australian School of Petroleum has kindly agreed to be Convenor in Chilla Bulbeck's absence in semester 1, 2006. Suzanne will be on study leave, so we are particularly grateful. Margaret Allen, Gender Studies, will act as on-site advisor for Suzanne, drawing on her long history with AWF, including a period as Convenor. We are still looking for a deputy convenor for 2006. Please contact Chilla if you are interested in this position. It's a great way to meet great women academics from across the university.
