Files & Project Folders
Working with large files on computers
Many applications create large files which could cause problems such as crashing or not saving. To overcome these problems there are a few steps you can take.
- Copy your file to the the temporary disk (D:\) and work on it there. When finished copy it back up to your home directory (U:\). Don’t forget to delete if from the temporary location.
- Word and Microsoft Applications
Word can use up to three times the amount of disk space of the file itself. When Word starts it creates a temporary file in the same directory as the original and an auto-recovery file in U:\Docs. If you don’t have enough disk space in these locations you may experience problems. If you follow Step 1 and make sure you have enough disk space on U:\ you should be okay. For graphics and images in Word use the link to file option when inserting a picture. This prevents the Word file increasing in size (as the picture is converted to a bitmap and then added to the word document and bitmaps are very large). Note that the linked file must always be available – in the same location as when first linked – when opening the document.

File/data recovery
If you need to recover a file send an email to cats@adelaide.edu.au. You will need to provide following details :
- Name of file
- Path of file was last located (e.g U:\documents and settings\civeng\testing.doc)
- Date of file was last seen/ date you want to revert the document to
CATS support staff will log an incident on your behalf with Technology Services to have the file restored to your Home folder. The restoration time is dependant on how far back you need the file recovered from. Older backups are stored off campus so may require longer retrieval time.
Student Project Folders
Students have the ability to request for a Project Folder, and that request is to be emailed to cats@adelaide.edu.au. This is mostly restricted to 3rd and final year students. Project Folders are 1GB in size and students are responsible for managing the space.
You will need to provide following details in your email request :
- Unique name for the folder that is relevant to the project - a generic or non-descriptive name will not be accepted
- Sub-faculty (e.g Civ Eng, Mech Eng)
- Student number/s (Axxxxxxx) of ALL student/s who need access to the same Project Folder - only the designated group members will have access
- Duration of Project Folder will be used for (e.g Semester 1 or Semester 1 & 2)
Your new Project Folder will show up as W:\Projects\<CATS_Project_sub-Faculty_project number> in My Computer.
Please allow up to 48 hours for the folder to be created.
Retaining Project Folders
At the end of each calendar year, all project folders will be deleted. If your project is to extend beyond the calendar year you must email cats@adelaide.edu.au requesting the Project Folder be retained. Please include the name of the Project Folder, the name of your subject supervisor, and a contact phone number.
Access to Existing Project Folders
If you need to access an existing project folder, please email to cats@adelaide.edu.au and specify whether this will be an entirely new group or an addition to the current group.
Extra Space
If more than 1GB is required, students will need to get their course supervisor to email cats@adelaide.edu.au with an authorised request for more space. You must demonstrate an increase in space is necessary.
