Usage & Rules
The IT Acceptable Use & Security Policy outlines rules for use of computers/internet across the University, including CATS. Although reading the Policy is strongly advised, if you have already done so the following summary should remind you of the basic do's and dont's.
Use
- CATS is provided solely for the purpose of your course work. Any use of the computers that do not relate directly to a course you are taking is not permitted. Personal and recreational use is expressly forbidden.
- CATS is not an Internet Service Provider and internet services are provided solely to assist with your course.
Installing Software
- Users are not permitted to install software onto workstations.
- Users are not permitted to install software into their home directories unless it is freeware. If you install freeware the licence must accompany the software.
- Installing shareware applications which require payment – such as WinZip or NJStar – is not permitted.
Users who install software illegally will have their accounts disabled and will be reported to the appropriate authorities for further action.
Rules
- No recreational web browsing
- No playing or storing on disk of games
- No display of or storing on disk of pornography
- Do not attempt to compromise system security
- Do not make your password available to anyone

Penalties
Failure to comply to above rules will result in suspension of your account. The first suspension period is two weeks and the head of your Department will be informed.
Further offences will be treated severely. All offenders will have after hours access removed for the remainder of the year.
