Scanning & Burning

 

Scanning

One scanner has been installed in CATS. It is located at

  • CATS Walk in PCs (Outside ECMS faculty office, Ingkarni Wardi Level 1)

The scanner has the ability to copy, scan & send to another application (e.g mail), or scan and print to 2 CATS printers (Printers shown below). You have the option to scan in both colour or black and white.

Using the Scanner

  1. Log on to the PC attach to the scanner
  2. Place your document on the scanner bed and select the scanner's icon on the desktop.
  3. Save your files to your Home Directory (U:\) 

Before you scan, bear the following in mind:

  • Drawings scan better at higher resolutions, low resolutions will produce poor results
  • What you see on the screen is not necessarily what you will get in print. A monitor will display for example 1024x768 pixels (dots) over its entire area. A printer is capable of producing 300 or 600 DPI (dotes per inch)
  • When imported into an application, the image may not look like the preview
  • The higher the resolution, the larger the file. A file may be tens of megabytes. Many graphic formats produce large files. Use JPEG format to keep the file size small
  • You may need to experiment to get your desired results

 

Burning CD/DVD

Media Types

All student machines at CATS have a CD/DVD writable optical device:

  1. Recordable (CD/DVD-R) – may be written to many times (multi-session) until they are full but cannot be erased
  2. Rewritable (CD/DVD-RW) – can be erased and rewritten to

Formatting

There are quite a few formats for CD/DVD burning, but you can only use two in the CATS:

  1. ISO – The data on this format is read only but all computers can read them without any special software. When you buy software to install on a computer this is the format that is used.
  2. UDF – This format makes the disc look like a normal disk to the computer and is used for the CD/DVD-RW format. It can be used like an external hard drive or usb stick. However the operating system has to have special software installed to do this. Windows XP has this built in, other systems will have to have it installed.
