Printing

There are four common printing problems and their solutions.

ProblemSolution
Your balance has reached the credit limit.

You only have a certain quota allocated for printing from University networked computers, you will need to go to University Contact Centre to top up your printing credit. More information on student printing.

Your system has lost contact with the printers. If your system has lost contact with the printers you will get the add printer menu when you try to print. Shut down the PC (not a simple reboot) and restart from 'cold'.
Printing problems resulting in a 'Stack Bypass' error on the printer. The most common mistake is to select Letter (American) size for documents.Incorrect paper sizes selected at the documant stage may cause this. Select A4 at the printer control panel when this occurs.
Your job is too complicated for the Plotter and your output is corrupted (usually applies to posters). Try:
  • reducing the resolution
  • reducing the colour depth.

Microsoft Office

All MS Office documents require approximately three times the disk space of the actual file size. As they become large and complicated (with many inserted pictures/speadsheets/auto-indexing etc) they tend to corrupt, especially if there is not enough free disk space. Make sure you make a backup before you start work. With Excel documents ensure that you don’t delete links to data sources.

ProblemSolution
Word
Error “Disk Full" (or similar).Make sure that the disk U:\ is not full.
Try saving to D:\temp.
If this fails use select all->copy in your current document open a new instance of Word paste the document into your "new" Word and save it.
