Biography
A/Prof Ian Chapman has a well-established track record of clinically based research relating to the endocrinology of aging and nutrition. His major research interest is currently the “anorexia of aging”, with a particular focus on the gastrointestinal control of appetite and energy intake, including the role of gastrointestinal hormones. This work has been supported by two NHMRC Project Grants (currently 2004-2006), a number of University of Adelaide and Royal Adelaide Hospital grants, and commercial funding (Organon, The Netherlands) – the latter to undertake an intervention study - and has been influential in raising the awareness, both nationally and internationally, of the importance of this problem, and the need for nutritional assessment and intervention where appropriate. A/Prof Chapman’s standing in the field of nutrition in the elderly is attested to by numerous invitations to speak at national and international scientific meetings (in 2005, he gave 4 invited plenary lectures in the United States). He is a co-author of 77 refereed publications, and 9 book chapters. Subsequent to his appointment to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in 1996, A/Prof Chapman has supervised 5 PhD students (from science, medical, dietetic, and nursing backgrounds), 4 honours science students, 2 overseas research fellows and numerous medical students undertaking research training attachments. His current PhD student is a specialist geriatrician, and three of his previous students are continuing in clinical research in the area of nutrition. Since 2000, he has been the Postgraduate Coordinator for the University of Adelaide Department of Medicine, with principal responsibility for PhD students undertaking clinical research
