Provenance of sedimentary rock systems in the Australian Proterozoic: palaeogeographic reconstructions of supercontinents
Project Details
The provenance and palaeogeographic sedimentary sequences within Proterozoic rift basins along the eastern margin of Proterozoic Australia are poorly constrained. Particularly in the southern Australian Craton and along the western margin of Laurentia, correlation of rift basin infill has emerged as important piercing points in attempts to reconstruct the supercontinent Rodinia.
This project will seek to establish the provenance and palaeogeographic setting of Proterozoic rift basin fill and look for possible contributions from sources east of the Proterozoic margin of Australia. The main tools will be the analysis of detrital zircons, and the geochemical and Nd and Pb isotopic compositions of sediments.
