Integrated Energy Systems: Fusion, Decentralisation, Storage and Conversion

A transformation of our energy systems is already emerging in response to the increase of renewable energy and the emergence of new economic drivers. What changes can we expect in our energy systems during the transition to a clean energy future? We are already seeing the emergence of fusion and hybrid technologies that combine renewable energy with conventional energy sources as a means to reduce the cost of the delivery of renewable energy.

In addition, the trend to more decentralised power systems will grow to complement the larger centralised generators. Some of these will be renewable, while others may be more efficient fossil-fuel based tri-generation systems. We are also beginning to see the emergence in energy storage systems such as hydrogen to make better use of existing renewable energy systems, where South Australia offers some unique opportunities. Finally, we are beginning to see the conversion between energy and alternative fuels.
