SA Coal Research Laboratory
The South Australian Coal Research Laboratory (SACRL) within the School Chemical Engineering was established to continue the work of the CRC for Clean Power from Lignite, particularly in relation to South Australian low-rank coals. In-house experimental facilities housed in its dedicated laboratory building in The University of Adelaide's Thebarton Research Park include:
- A small bench-scale, high-temperature tube reactor
- A small pilot-scale circulating fluidised-bed reactor with a nominal throughput of 10 kg/hr
- Analytical facilities such as:
- bomb calorimetry
- CHN elemental analysis
- thermo-gravimetric analysis
- differential scanning calorimetry
- gas composition analysis via gas chromatography
- mass spectrometry
- fourier transform infrared spectroscopy
- The group is in the process of procuring a small pilot-scale kiln reactor plant to research pyrolysis of wastes for production of liquid and gaseous fuels
