Associate Professor Simon Barry from the Children's Research Centre and his co-investigators have identified a gene which needs to be "switched off" in order to reverse autoimmune disease.

Professor Barry's breakthrough has been published in Nature Immunology and has significant implications for millions of people who suffer from type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and other autoimmune disorders.

Simon Barry and Tim Sadlon from the Autoimmune Diseases Stream are part of a team that has published a landmark paper on the nature of immune tolerance in Nature Immunology.

The paper sheds new light on the mechanism that causes autoimmune disease and how autoimmunity may be reversed. The finding has significant potential to change the lives of those who suffer from type 1 diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease and rheumatoid arthritis.
