Meet the research leader in mental health
Professor Michael Sawyer OAM, MBBS PhD Dip ChildPsych, FRANZCP FRCPC
Professor Sawyer is the leader of the Mental Health Stream at the Children's Research Centre and Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Adelaide. In addition, he is Head of the Research and Evaluation Unit at the Women's and Children's Hospital, a service established to undertake research projects relevant to the mental health and wellbeing of children in Australia.
In 2008 Professor Sawyer was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for his service to medicine in the field of child and adolescent mental health, particularly through his contributions to the design of new programs of intervention and through the promotion of community awareness. He is also a past recipient of the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund Medal.
Professor Sawyer is currently evaluating the effectiveness of the South Australian Nurse Family Home Visiting Program (SA-FHV) aimed at improving the wellbeing of mothers and infants during a child's first two years of life. He is also undertaking other research aimed at identifying factors which adversely affect the mental health and well-being of mothers caring for children with a chronic disability.
