Our research in vaccine trials
Our work in vaccine trials centres around the prevention of infectious diseases in childhood, and takes place in the Vaccinology and Immunology Research Trials Unit (VIRTU) at the Women's and Children's Hospital. We conduct clinical trials of new and existing vaccines in children in order to test their immunogenicity and safety. We also innovate combination vaccines to limit the number of needles children have to receive. In addition, we undertake studies in infectious disease epidemiology and social epidemiology in order to inform public health policy and immunisation service delivery, to ensure optimal immunisation coverage rates in the community.
VIRTU is recognised nationally and internationally for its ability to conduct clinical research to a world-class standard. We are part of the National Vaccine Research Network, a collaborative group of research centres in Australia motivated to prevent the spread of infectious diseases and contribute to knowledge and teaching in vaccinology on a global scale.
