& Sustainability

Leader
Turbulence Energy & Combustion (TEC) Group,
School of Mechanical Engineering

Gus has recently been appointed Deputy Director of the Research Institute and heads its Energy, Emissions and Offsets Program. Through his role in the Research Institute he is seeking to establish partnerships with industry and government in adopting holistic and multi-disciplinary approaches to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.

Through the TEC Group (the largest research group in the Faculty of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences) and in partnership with industry, he has been jointly responsible for the development and design of the combustors used in the Olympic torches and stadium flames for the Sydney and Athens Olympic Games. He has also been responsible for the invention and development of the processing jet (Gyro-Therm) technology that halves NOx emissions from rotary kilns within the minerals processing sector.

He jointly leads the development of a new technology to dramatically reduce the emission of ultra-fine particles and gaseous pollutants, such as mercury, in partnership with industry. He is also active in the development of new technology to better produce and/or utilize alternative energy sources to fossil fuels, such as bio and waste fuels. He is joint inventor in seven patents, more than 150 peer review publications and 40 consulting reports.
