Strategic Climate Policy

This program considers the international law issues associated with the development of sustainable energy.  This work is on-going and involves an examination of the international human rights regime, regional and global energy conventions, existing environmental treaties (including the United Nations framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol), and a consideration of possible future developments in relation to customary international law and the treaties regimes to support sustainable development.

Creating an International Law of Sustainable Energy: Contribution of Law to Sustainable Development and Climate Change

Sustainable energy is an essential component of sustainable development. There is an urgent need to develop international strategies to avert the global crises posed by the lack of sustainable energy solutions, such as climate change, poverty and destablilisation of international peace and security.  Innovative legal initiatives have a part to play in this process. However, to date these have not been forthcoming. This project will address this deficit by developing a detailed comprehensive law of sustainable energy through the vehicle of a legal management regime and place energy at the heart of the sustainable development debate where it belongs.
