Centre for Learning and Professional Development

The University of Adelaide Australia

For International and ESL students

The University of Adelaide is committed to making your time as an international student enjoyable and productive. The CLPD provides significant support for international students and students from non-English Speaking Backgrounds (NESB).

ALL provides Semester Seminars on developing your academic learning and language skills, such as, understanding lectures, participating in tutorial discussions, and avoiding plagiarism. These sessions are designed to help you survive and thrive with your tertiary studies.

Communicating with Confidence

A series of conversation development sessions are held for students who have English as a second (or subsequent) language and provides opportunities for speaking practice through discussing tertiary related academic issues. The sessions are offered on Mondays, 12:10pm - 1:00pm, in both Semester 1 and Semester 2. Download the Communicating with Confidence flier

Volunteer Program for conversation development (ESL students)

An internationally recognised volunteer program is also available to provide language support for students from non-English Speaking Backgrounds (NESB) who have an additional need to improve their oral communication. (See the Adelaidean article: Volunteer program wins international praise.

The Volunteer Program currently has about 40 trained volunteers who work with international students. Volunteers are matched with one or more students, who then arrange informal meetings to suit their individual needs and time availability. Our volunteers are men and women from all walks of life; from those who are actively engaged in work or study but spend some lunchtimes with their students, to retirees with a broader range of time options.

Are you a student who needs a volunteer?
