National Teaching Awards

Beginning 2012, the national Teaching Awards Program will be administered by the newly established Office for Learning and Teaching (OLT), in the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. The OLT takes responsibility for the funding and programs previously run by the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC).

An overview of the Teaching Awards on offer in 2012 is given below.

For further information please consult the OLT website,
or contact the Teaching Awards and Grants Officer, 8313 4862.

Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning

"Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning recognise and reward the diverse contributions made by individuals and teams to the quality of student learning. Citations are awarded to those who have made a significant contribution to the quality of student learning in a specific area of responsibility over a sustained period, whether they are academic staff, general staff, sessional staff or institutional associates. Citations provide an opportunity for distinctive institutional missions, values and priorities in learning and teaching to be recognised. Citations are awarded for a range of contributions to student learning, both direct and indirect.

Up to 160 Citations, including the Early Career category, with prize value of $10,000 each are available in 2012." (OLT website)

Citation Deadlines

OLT Citation selection is a two-stage process. Applications must first be submitted to the University Teaching Awards and Grants Working Group, who will then select up to eight applications to send to the OLT for consideration. For this reason, it is important that you pay close attention to the following timetable if you wish to submit a Citation application.

Intention to submit
1 March
Please fill out the Intention to Submit form, and forward to your line manager, Associate Dean (Learning and Teaching ), and the Teaching Awards and Grants Officer. This will ensure you are kept informed of relevant deadlines and events, and that you are able to receive any assistance or advice that you require.
Draft
1 April
Feedback on Citation drafts is available through the Teaching Awards and Grants Office. If you would like feedback, you must submit a full draft by email to the Teaching Awards and Grants Officer by this date. Applications will also be accepted that have not gone through the feedback process (however, this is not recommended).
Final application
15 May
This application must include your Written Statement, Photograph, References and Supporting Materials (as outlined in the OLT guidelines). You will not need to submit a nomination form at this stage; if your application is selected for submission, the Teaching Awards and Grants Officer will organise this with you.

The TAG WP selection and ranking meeting will take place in late May/early June. If your application is selected for submission, the Teaching Awards and Grants Officer will work with you to finalise your application. If your application is not selected, feedback from the TAG WP will be made available to you.
OLT Closing Date
15 June
If your application is accepted for submission to the OLT, it is important that you are available in the week leading up to the closing date, so that your application can be finalised and nomination form completed.
