Student Experience of Learning and Teaching (SELT) System

Background

The mission of the CLPD is to assist the university community to improve student learning and staff teaching through development programs and research. One of the objectives of the CLPD in fulfilling this mission is to develop, manage and implement appropriate methods for the evaluation of student learning and staff teaching using methods that are informed by educational research.

The CLPD assists the University of Adelaide in the implementation of the Student Experience of Learning and Teaching Policy.

The CLPD supports the process of regular, planned evaluations of individual or group teaching and associated student learning outcomes, as well as course and program evaluations. The purpose of such an evaluation is to provide staff with valid and reliable information with which to make informed decisions about improving student learning outcomes. SELT is only one of the necessary components for making such informed decisions and staff and Schools should use other methods, such as reflective practice and peer review, student assessment results and teaching portfolios in order to construct an informed view of the learning and teaching being evaluated. Evaluation is a positive process and should be used for the enhancement of staff development and student learning.

The SELT process

The SELT system enables you to use either the standard template or to create a questionnaire to suit your particular teaching situation and developmental needs. All services related to standard SELT templates are provided free of charge and include:

  • construction of your questionnaire(s) in pdf format;
  • processing of the student responses;
  • summarising the student responses in an easily readable format;
  • returning the results in pdf format as an attachment to email.

How to request a SELT

Staff may download any of the standard forms (as pdf files) for:

  • Individual Teacher SELT (Standard or extended Standard Teacher SELT)
  • Group Teaching SELT (Standard or extended Standard Teacher SELT)
  • Course SELT (Standard or extended Standard Course SELT)

To use these forms you do not have to place a request with CLPD.
You should:

  • download the required form and associated cover sheet
  • make the appropriate number of copies for your evaluation
  • organize an appropriate administrator and conduct the evaluation
  • return the completed questionnaires and cover sheet to:
    Assessment and Evaluation, CLPD, Level 2 Schulz Building
    in an envelope marked “Confidential Evaluations”

The SELT report will be sent to you by email and the survey sheets will be returned in the internal mail. For surveys that require a fast turn around time (e.g. departmental review, application for academic promotion) the envelope should be clearly and prominently labelled as 'urgent'.

You may also request a non-standard evaluation questionnaire by contacting Assessment and Evaluation on extension 33496. Please give at least 10 working days notice for these. Assessment and Evaluation will assist you in choosing appropriate questions and will send you the questionnaire (as a pdf file) to you by email. You may then use the form as described above.

The general policy relating to the return of results and original questionnaires is:

  • the requestor receives the SELT report and the original questionnaire forms
  • the Head of School/Faculty will receive a copy of the SELT report
  • where the Head of School/Faculty is the requestor, the teacher(s) evaluated will also receive, at the same time, a copy of the SELT report
