Facet B
Students find/generate needed information/data using appropriate methodology.
Working in Facet B of the framework, students find or generate the information they need using methodology appropriate to their inquiry and their discipline. This methodology can be set by the instructor, negotiated between the instructor and student, or entirely generated by the student, depending on the level of autonomy at which the student is operating. The level at which a student works in Facet B may be indicative of their degree of experience in higher education, or within a particular discipline. A student working at Level I in Facet B might be able to collect and record needed information from a source prescribed or indicated by their instructor, using a set methodology; students at this level are more likely to work with information that is clearly evident in the literature or in an experimental process. At the other end of the spectrum, at Level V, students will be able to collect information or data from sources they have located and evaluated themselves, in accordance with a self-determined line of inquiry, and they can select, or develop, research strategies in line with autonomously-developed guidelines based in a familiarity with the requirements and conventions of their disciplines. |
