Fencing Club

Ever considered yourself the swashbuckling type, sword in hand, hair ruffled by the breeze, staring your opponent in the eye? Or are you after a contact martial art which isn't too painful? Want to improve your hand-eye-blade-kill coordination? Or do you just want to improve your fitness and have a lot of fun at the same time? Then the art of fencing us for you!

Fencing is the sport of sword fighting, based on three weapons of the seventeenth century Europe (being the Foil, Epeé and Sabre). The participants pair off and duel on a thin strip of ground under the watchful eye of a referee. Each successful hit scores a point and the bout is usually to the best of five hits. Modern fencing is scored electronically, but beginners learn how to judge bouts as well as participate.

AUFeC is one of the oldest sporting clubs in the University, and has a national reputation for producing quality fencers. As well as competing in metropolitan competitions every two months, university fencers (including beginners!) can also go interstate to the Intervarsity Games in common week. As an 'equal opportunity' club we have a good 50-50 split of male and female fencers. Feel like beating up a guy on your own terms? Yet another reason to join!

Interested? If so. look out for our O-Week table and sign up for your first try-out lesson ($3). If you want to stick with the club, the annual membership is $20. This includes use of club equipment and an eight week beginner's course (starting the second week of Uni). Don't forget - if you're good at sports you can qualify for a "Blue" or Club Letters, and as University awards, they appear on your transcript. A fencing award makes an interesting highlight to your CV!
