Adelaide University Boardriders Club

The AU Boardriders Club is not just a club for windsurfers! We are now a club for all ocean-going board-riders, namely surfing and kiteboarding.

If you are keen on Windsurfing we have heaps of gear from advanced wave and slalom boards to the newest and easiest beginner gear. Think windsurfing is about long boards that weigh a tonne? Not any more! With today's new materials and technology, the gear is light, easy to rig and most importantly fun! Beginner sailing days are held in April/March where everyone comes out for a BBQ and beginners can pick up some tips from the more experienced sailors. Gear is free to borrow for members, and if no one else wants to use it, you can keep it at your house!

The club is opening up to surfers this year. If you want to learn, then we can organise lessons for you. For the surfers who are already pretty good, you can come along on our surf camp or compete in the University Games. This is one of the greatest events held each year. Surfing in the comp is a great way to get a ticket to a week of partying.

Want to learn the newest sport around? Kitesurfing has taken off all around the world, and especially in SA since we have awesome conditions for it. Lessons are provided to members for the right price (FREE!) and gear can be bought from Onboard with a special discount. If you can already rip then you can still join and come along to camps and pub nights – great way to meet some new flying mates.

Onboard provides our members with a discount, so you can pick up any of the latest surfing/windsurfing/kitesurfing for a great price. Check out their website at http://www.onboard.com.au .

Membership Fee: $10* (AU Students)

*If you aren't an AU student then an additional $60 Sports Association fee is required.

And here are some details from the Club's Inaugural Boardriders Championship

It was an early start to the with most of the committee getting up at 6am to get the final things sorted before everyone got to the beach. The competition finally started at 9am and the first three surfers battled it out in the first heat. There were 4 rounds before the final, and there was plenty of good surfing to be seen. There was a crowd between thirty and forty people enjoying the atmosphere and lapping up the sun. The final was fought out between Mark Plummer and Angus Auschwager and after 15 minutes of surfing, the judges anounced Angus as the Inaugural Boardriders Champion. Redbull came down at lunch time and we had a BBQ to keep the competitors from starving. Everyone left the beach at about 2:30pm and headed back to Adelaide to get ready for the party.

Everything was setup in time and 170 people came to the party to relax after a good day - most people seemed to enjoy the sun a bit too much (there were a lot of burnt faces)! All the prizes were announced at 10pm with the following results:

1st Place Angus Auschwager
2nd Place Mark Plummer
3rd Place Ed Day
Best Stack James Biven
Best Manouver Hannah Doyle
Best Wave Angus Auschwager

All in all it was a very successfull day and the club benefited in many ways from it (financially and membership). Another one will be held early early next year.
