Parents

Whilst the school environment is obviously integral in the formation of ideas and understanding of concepts by young people, such as understanding the relevance of universities in our society, the role played by parents is also hugely important.

Adelaide Compass has been developed from an understanding that, for many students involved in the program, knowledge of higher education and the possibility of attending university is unlikely to have been considered or discussed at home.

Adelaide Compass's long term aim is to encourage those students involved to consider higher education as a viable opportunity for them post high school; this will be achieved through the development of partnerships and enduring relationships between the University of Adelaide and a number of schools and their communities in the northern suburbs.

Your Child and Compass

Students involved in Compass will enjoy a range of exciting and educational activities and projects in their schools and at the University of Adelaide, where they will meet and interact with the University's staff and students. The Program is tailored to each individual school's requirements and as such there is a wide variety of year groups and subject areas currently being developed from Year 1 Maths through to Year 5/6 Science.

As part of Adelaide Compass your child will not only receive encouragement and inspiration from University staff and students in their school through projects and activities; they will also get the opportunity to further develop their knowledge and understanding through hands on activities and sessions at one of the University's campuses. This visit to a University campus will not only be educational it will also provide an inspirational taste of what University is actually like.

Other activities which your child may be involved in through Adelaide Compass are one-on-one literacy support sessions and after school supported study groups. Your school will be able to tell you if these opportunities are currently available.

You and Compass

Parents have an enormous influence on the decisions their child will make about their education and career. Parental perceptions and experiences of education and work have a real impact on children from an early age.

Parents may feel that higher education is too expensive or impractical, or may believe that it can be too hard to get into university - or just find the whole area too intimidating or confusing.

Adelaide Compass would like to assist parents with some "myth busting" on these commonly held misconceptions.
