Training

We take the training of our Adelaide Compass Volunteers very seriously; not only do we wish for them to be a great resource for primary schools and their students but more importantly we wish to ensure that they feel comfortable and confident in what they are delivering. Comprehensive training goes some way to achieving this.

Students wishing to become volunteers in the Compass Program will firstly need to be accepted on the Student Leadership Certificate Program run through the Transition and Advisory Service.

There is compulsory training for the Student Leadership Certificate Program that consists of:

  • Leadership 101
  • Cross cultural competence and communication
  • Referral, Customer Service and Teamwork
  • Public speaking and managing groups
  • Project, event and risk management

Volunteers also take part in specific Adelaide Compass training and information sessions including an induction on ‘Promoting Safety and Wellbeing’ aimed at tertiary students working with young people. For volunteers wishing to assist in the literacy support area of the program there is also specific Mulitlit training.

As noted, training goes some way towards developing confidence; it can’t however replicate what happens in the real world. For this reason we will always endeavour to ensure that a member of Adelaide Compass staff or a well informed teacher is available during initial sessions undertaken by volunteers to offer support and advice on any situation or query that may arise.
