Research Goals

The goal of the research being undertaken by the periodontolal pathology group is to understand the pathobiology of periodontal diseases, their consequences, and their interactions with other significant health challenges, including such diverse areas as chronic inflammatory diseases, cardiovascular disease and pre-term low birth weight babies.

  • Relationship between periodontal disease and rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Risk indicators for periodontal disease in an urban Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population.
  • Generation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS) and their potential use in periodontal regeneration.
  • Novel treatments of pathological bone loss.

  • The use of human gingival fibroblasts as the feeder layer for iPS cells.
  • Investigation of periodontal ligament stem cell self-renewal, survival and tissue regeneration in vivo.
  • Expression of rheumatoid factor, citrullinated proteins, and anti-citrullinated protein antibodies in normal and inflamed gingival tissues. 
  • Influence of Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) on the expression of osteoprotegerin (OPG) and receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL) in gingival crevicular fluid of patients with and without chronic periodontitis.
