Student Workshops for Semester 2

 

Yoga and Mind-Body Awareness

There are many forms and aspects of yoga. These sessions will focus particularly on yoga as a path for deepening awareness of mind-body connections. Participants can expect to learn some simple routines they can practice at home, and to develop skills which can be used for relaxing, recharging and enhancing achievement of personal goals. The sessions will involve some physical exercise, stretching, breathing and meditation.

Sessions are free but bookings are essential.

Meditation Level 1: Concentration and Calm

Meditation is an ancient skill that can be learnt in modern times. Traditionally meditation was used to overcome mental suffering, and is now being used to overcome stress, anxiety and depression. You will learn meditation methods that cultivate concentration and calm; you will also learn how to use meditation to cultivate healthy feelings and mind states. I invite you to come along and discover how meditation can benefit your life.

Balance: Study & Life

It is difficult to balance study & life (sleep, relationships, social life and work). If you spend too much time on study you may not study effectively because you have lost the chance to recharge yourself. If you spend too much time on non study activities you will not have enough time to study. Balance study & life well and you will achieve the best you can. This workshop will help you get the balance right.

Managing Your Time

‘Time’ is arguably our most precious resource. It’s important to use it wisely in order to effectively deal with the demands of University life. This workshop will explore ideas that can assist you to better manage your time.

Meditation, Level 2: Mindfulness

In this Level 2 course, you will learn how to cultivate mindfulness (awareness of the body, the feelings and the mind), resulting in greater understanding of those aspects of yourself. Mindfulness is a more advanced meditation tactic. In ancient times, mindfulness was used to overcome anxiety, depression and stress. You are invited to come along and discover how mindfulness meditation can benefit your life.

Managing stress and being a successful student

A certain amount of stress and worry are an inevitable and necessary part of being a student. If stress and worry become too much, they interfere with study. If you manage stress and worry correctly you will become a more successful student. Stress and worry can be managed by developing a lifestyle that keeps them under control. This workshop will describe that lifestyle.

Yoga Breathing: An aid for study

Although we all breathe everyday, the breath itself usually goes unnoticed.

This workshop draws on yoga and Western psychology to explore the ways that the breath can be used as a remarkably powerful mind-body link. It can be used to help feel calm, to energize and in particular to enhance states of mind to help study.

Managing a PhD (for 1st year PhD students)

Embarking on the PhD journey can be both exciting and daunting. This workshop will explore a particularly important aspect of this journey, namely self-management strategies (including work-life balance, supervision, maintaining motivation). It will also investigate what you can do to ensure that you are prepared to deal with the ’ups and downs’ of the PhD process.

Assisting students in distress

A one-hour session that will provide staff with information about:

  • How to talk with a distressed student
  • How to quickly access support for a distressed student
  • What to do if a student is at risk of suicide or threatening to harm others
  • Practical resources for students on campus (eg Accommodation, Health Service)
  • Flow chart that summarises the information provided in the session.
