| Course Description | Studies in European Art since the Renaissance focuses on the fascinating history of European art from 1500 to 1800 and spans the Renaissance and Baroque periods through to the Realist and Impressionist era. While it examines paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture and decorative arts in the collection of the Art Gallery of South Australia, it also includes reference to collections in museums and galleries around the world. The course directs particular attention to the chronological timeline and thematic trends occurring during the High Renaissance in Italy and northern Europe. Mannerist and Baroque art in late sixteenth and seventeenth-century Italy, Spain and the Netherlands, eighteenth-century Rococo, Neo-classical and Romantic art in France and Spain, and Realist and Impressionist art in nineteenth-century Britain and France. The course facilitates the development of knowledge of key concepts and approaches utilised in the discipline of art history as a way of understanding the varied meanings of art and visual culture in early modern Europe. |
