    1. A confident working knowledge of the fundamentals of Western music theory relevant to a variety of music styles including classical, jazz, and popular styles of music.
    2. An understanding of the relationship between music notation systems and music style, with an ability to apply music notation systems appropriate to the above music styles.
    3. An ability to apply knowledge of Western music notation to the piano keyboard.
    4. A confident ability to apply analytical skills to musical structures - the ability to analyse and describe basic melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and formal structures using conventional terminology and symbols.
    5. An understanding of the basic principles of musical organisation.
    6. An understanding of the principles of functional tonality and diatonic chord progression.
    7. An understanding of and ability to apply techniques of 4 part vocal style writing and piano style writing.
    8. An ability to compose and arrange short pieces of music using traditional Western music notation.

    Learning & Teaching Modes

    This course aims to consolidate and extend knowledge of Western music theory, including skills in music analysis, arranging and composition, building on knowledge and skills learned in Theory of Music 1MS.

    The Seminar components provide a small seminar style group interactive learning environment for the attainment of key knowledges and skills required for the completion of assessed components. This includes independent and group class work and formative assessment tasks, and the development of practical music keyboard skills.

    Workload

    The information below is provided as a guide to assist students in engaging appropriately with the course requirements.

    In addition to attendance at and participation in the Tuesday (1 hr) and Wednesday (2hrs) Seminars (3hrs per week = 75 hours over the full year), students are expected to devote at least 8 hours per week of independent study in preparation for classes, including required reading, completion of take home formative assessment sheets, drafting of arranging and composition work, completion of summative assessment tasks, and practice of keyboard exercises and pieces.

    INTEGRATION AND APPLICATION OF LEARNING
    It is expected that students will make every effort to integrate and apply learned knowledge and skills in this course across all aspects of their program of studies at CASM, and in particular in the Aural Development 11MS, Style Studies 11MS, Practical Music Study 11MS, Performance 11MS and Practical Extension 11 courses.

    Assessment in this course is based on attendance at and participation in seminar classes, satisfactory completion of assigned tasks relevant to the key topics listed in 4.3, two examinations (one at the end of each Semester), and two keyboard skills assessments (one at the end of each Semester).

    Assessment Related Requirements

    Students are required to attend 100% of classes in this course, and to participate fully in all tasks and learning activities offered in the classes.

    Please note that it is a formal requirement to attend a minimum of 70% of all classes in this course to achieve a Pass or above grade. It is expected that students will satisfactorily complete all in-class tasks and activities as scheduled, and submit all formal assignment work by the due date.

    Assessment Detail

    1. Attendance and participation (Non-Graded) (LO 17, 18, 19, 20) 5% (formative)
    Attendance alone is not regarded as active participation. The Assessment Criteria for participation in this course are as follows:

    1. Punctual attendance at class, and remaining for the full duration of the class
    2. Preparation for classes, including set readings and completion of take home exercises. Take home reading and tasks should be completed to the best of the student’s ability.
    3. Active participation in all learning activities to the best of one’s ability, including non-graded assessment tasks
    4. Constructive contribution to the in-class learning environment, including active engagement in learning processes through active listening, note-taking, contribution to discussion, contribution to group and leadership activities, undertaking guided learning tasks, and seeking clarification where needed
    5. Satisfactory completion of formative guided in-class tasks and activities. Students should actively engage in all learning tasks and activities and attempt each task and/or activity to the best of their ability.

    Independent Learning Project
    Assessment of ability to independently learn and apply an understanding of diatonic and chromatic intervals, including simple and compound intervals, inversions, intervals across staves (treble and bass), intervals above and below the tonic, harmonic and melodic intervals, and consonant and dissonant intervals, from explanatory notes.

    Composition and Arranging
    Assessment of ability to compose and fully notate a simple original piece of chamber music using Cubase or Sibelius, including use of selected transposing instrument/s, and demonstrating a good understanding of musical organization, and structure, functional harmony; homophonic and polyphonic compositional techniques; writing within correct ranges for the selected musical instruments; including dynamic, mood, tempo, articulation and expression markings; and demonstrating creative originality.

    3. Examinations [Semester 2] 40% (summative)

    4. Individual Keyboard Assessments 10% (summative).

    Individual Keyboard Skills Assessment (10%)

    Semester 2 Examination:
    Individual multiple question comprehensive assessment of knowledge learned in both Semester 1 and Semester 2 of the course.

    Keyboard Skills Assessment:
    Individual assessment of keyboard reading and performance skill based on two selected keyboard pieces.

    Submission

    All assessable work in this course should be submitted in person to the course lecturer. The only exception to this is where the assessment task specifies electronic return.

    All assessment tasks must be submitted by the due date.

    MODIFIED ARRANGEMENTS FOR COURSEWORK ASSESSMENT: EXTENSIONS, REPLACEMENT EXAMINATIONS, AND ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT

    In accordance with the principle that course assessment must be fair and equitable, course assessment practices may be modified under specific eligibility conditions as follows:

    Assessment Task Extensions
    For eligible students whose capacity to demonstrate their true level of competence in an assessment task was, is or will be seriously impaired because of medical, compassionate or extenuating circumstances.

    Replacement Examinations
    For eligible students whose capacity to demonstrate their true level of competence in a final examination was, is or will be seriously impaired because of medical, compassionate or extenuating circumstances.

    Additional Assessments
    A second opportunity for eligible students who obtain a Fail grade in a course to demonstrate the required skills, knowledge and other course outcomes

    Students may be eligible for modified course assessment on grounds of MEDICAL, COMPASSIONATE or EXTENUATING circumstance. Details of eligibility criteria are contained in the University’s Modified Arrangements for Coursework Assessment Policy (http://www.adelaide.edu.au/policies/3303/)

    Where a student wishes to apply for modified arrangements for their coursework assessment, they are required to submit a written application using the appropriate CASM Modified Arrangements for Coursework Assessment form.

    Form A: Application for Assessment Task Extension:
    Students are required to submit assessment tasks by the due date.

    Application for an extension to the due date for individual assessment tasks (other than tests and examinations) may be made on MEDICAL, COMPASSIONATE or EXTENUATING grounds, and must be submitted at least 5 business days before the due date, or within 5 business days of the exceptional conditions arising, with supporting documentation.

    The form must then be signed by the CASM Head of Programs.

    Extensions will not normally be granted for periods beyond 10 working days, or the last day on which teaching may occur in the relevant teaching period, whichever is earlier.

    Students should note that marks may be deducted for late work. Please consult your lecturers and Course Profiles for details.

    IMPORTANT: Cases in which it is not practicable for extensions to be applied include: assessment tasks that are tightly integrated into teaching; assessment tasks that preclude the granting of additional time (e.g. when the answers have already been released); where the assessment involves a fieldtrip, or a group activity such as a music performance, which cannot readily be approximated or replicated.

    Assessment tasks which are not suitable for extensions are identified in the Course Profile.

    Form B: Application to Undertake Replacement Assessment: Tests
    Application to undertake a replacement test may be made on MEDICAL, COMPASSIONATE or EXTENUATING grounds, and must be submitted for consideration, with supporting documentation, within 5 business days of the initial test.

    The form must then be signed by the CASM Head of Programs.

    Form C: Application to Undertake Replacement Assessment: Examinations
    Application to undertake a replacement examination may be made on MEDICAL, COMPASSIONATE or EXTENUATING grounds, and must be submitted for consideration, with supporting documentation, within 5 business days of the initial examination.

    The form must then be signed by the CASM Head of Programs.

    Form D: Application to Undertake Additional Assessment: Last Course
    Provision is made for modified assessment for students who have failed only one single course that is required to complete a program level. Such provisions are made on an individual basis to enable students to complete or graduate in a given year.

    Application may be made for additional assessment to enable completion of the last course required for program completion. The additional assessment task may not necessarily be an examination, but can be a task which will give the student a second chance to demonstrate they have achieved the course learning outcomes.

    Permission for additional assessment is normally only granted for students who have met the attendance requirements of the course and who have completed (not necessarily passed) the required assessment tasks throughout the teaching year. Please note under these provisions the final assessment task will be weighed at more than 20% of the total course assessment.

    The form must then be signed by the CASM Head of Programs.

    Exceptions: In certain circumstances, the CASM Examiners’ Committee, in consultation with the Course Coordinator, may grant modified arrangements where a student’s underlying mark is below 45% (ie. Completion of Program Offer - CASM Bridging Program).

    Please note: The maximum mark/grade for a course for which an Additional Assessment is granted is 50 Pass or Non-Graded Pass in accord with the University’s approved Mark and Grade Schemes.

    Additional Assessment Second Chance: Final Result 45-49% Provisions
    Additional replacement assessment on Academic Grounds is automatically available to students who have achieved a final mark of 45-49%. Permission for additional assessment is normally only granted for students who have met the attendance requirements of the course and who have completed (not necessarily passed) the required assessment tasks throughout the teaching year. Please note under these provisions the final assessment task will be weighed at more than 20% of the total course assessment.

    REDEMPTION POLICY
    Resubmission of Assessment Tasks: 90% of the assessment tasks in this course are summative. Students who submit an assignment task and receive a fail mark may be asked by the lecturer to resubmit the assignment task or a revised assignment task to improve their level of understanding and achievement. Resubmission of work should take place within two weeks of notification of failing the assignment. Requests for resubmission of assignments must be made to the course lecturer concerned and must be made within one week of notification of receipt of the fail mark. As a general rule, a maximum of two resubmissions are permitted for each individual component.

    ASSIGNMENT COVER AND PLAGIARISM STATEMENT
    All submitted assigned tasks must be accompanied by a completed and signed CASM Assignment Cover Sheet. These are a legal requirement and are legally binding. Copies of the blue CASM Assignment Cover Sheet are available to students in Room 603, and are also available from the CASM Office upon request.

    PENALTIES FOR LATE SUBMISSION OF ASSIGNMENTS
    Penalties for late submission without approved extension, will apply at the rate of 5% (deducted from the overall final mark for the individual assessment task per day), up to a maximum of 20% - ie. 4 days and over. Please note that this can result in a Fail Grade for the particular component.

    STUDENT COPIES OF ALL SUBMITTED WORK
    Students are reminded to keep their own copy of all submitted work for their personal records.

    ASSESSMENT FEEDBACK
    Students receive regular feedback on their academic progress in this course, including in relation to meeting the attendance and participation requirements and in relation to each assessed task. In addition to the feedback on each individual assessed task, students also receive a comprehensive mid-year written Progress Report outlining their progress to date. Students may make an appointment to meet with the course lecturer to discuss their individual progress.

    Turn-around time on return of assessments will be a maximum of four weeks.
