This course provides an advanced approach to the field of enquiry under the rubric of the Department of Politics and International Studies and will attend to both theoretical and applied issues. The central aim of the Common Course is to critically explore challenging contemporary debates in Politics and International Studies. Honours students will gain a sound background in Western political analysis and critiques pertaining to national, international and transnational questions. Topics to be covered may include debates on the following: methodological issues; problems of democratic participation; central concepts in political theory such as freedom, justice and equality, global justice and governance, human rights, civil society, social capital and democratic theory.
