The Bachelor of International Studies will equip you with depth of understanding in areas such as global processes, relationships and the distinctions between societies throughout the world. International issues such as such as globalisation, security and war will be examined, and 'core' courses in international and comparative politics, history and international studies are combined with optional topics in the areas of Politics, History, European and Asian studies. Studies in a foreign language are highly recommended and you are encouraged to spend one or two semesters at an overseas university to gain valuable experience and cultural perspective.

Our graduates work in global careers in areas including trade and business, foreign affairs, defence and intelligence, journalism, and humanitarian and developmental organisations.

    Study Abroad and Exchange Opportunities

The University has student exchange links with over 100 overseas institutions. You can study overseas for one or two semesters which counts as credit towards your degree program at the University of Adelaide. In addition there are no extra tuition fees for this study. Double Degrees

If you have strong interests in more than one area, then completing a double degree is a great investment in your future. Most double degrees can be completed in four years of full time study and you will graduate with two parchments. The following double degree programs have direct entry codes for SATAC:

  • Bachelor of International Studies / Bachelor of Arts
  • Bachelor of International Studies / Bachelor of Economics
  • Bachelor of Media / Bachelor of International Studies
  • Bachelor of International Studies / Bachelor of Laws (5 years)
  • Concurrent Degrees

Are you enrolled in a single degree and would like to apply for a second degree? Have you ever wondered if you could study a combination of programs not covered in any of the listed double degrees? Both of these options are possible. And, by selecting the appropriate courses to enrol in, you can complete both awards in four years of full time study.

You can apply through SATAC for one program, and then apply for the second program the following year. Even better, you may be able to apply internally through the university for your second program in the middle of the year. The university rules for internal transfers, i.e. transferring from one degree to another or applying to enrol in a second degree can be found at http://www.adelaide.edu.au/student/admission/internaltransfers.

Please talk to the Faculty Office for enrolment advice if you are considering this option.

    Diploma in Languages

Studying for a humanities and social sciences degree means you can choose to study a language as part of your degree. Alternatively, any student enrolled in an undergraduate program at the university can elect to study a language through the Diploma in Languages. Start as a complete beginner or with more advanced knowledge and choose from Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Modern Greek or Spanish. The Diploma in Languages will extend study for one year to fit the language sequence, and you will graduate with certificates in both your program and the Diploma in Languages. You will leave university with language expertise, communication skills and greater cultural insight.

*The Diploma in Languages is not available to international students.

    • Higher Education applicants
You must have completed at least half a year full time equivalent university study. A Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated for each separate program you have undertaken (apart from some double degree programs where the GPA is combined). You compete on the basis of your best GPA. GPAs earned from non-award study within the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences are also considered.
    • VET applicants
You must have completed an AQF Diploma or above. Your application will be ranked according to the level of the award.
    • Special Entry applicants
You must be 18 years or over before February 1st of the year that you will be studying. If you have studied a higher education program within the last two years, you must not have studied more than 2 years full-time equivalent in that program and you must not hold a completed higher education level award. If you meet this criteria, you will be ranked according to your result in the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). Personal Competencies (PC) and Employment Experience (EE) statements may also contribute to your rank. Your STAT result is not weighted between verbal and quantitative components. If you submit a PC or EE statement, and one of these ranks higher than your STAT score, then the highest ranking statement will contribute 50% to your overall rank and the STAT will contribute the remaining 50%. If you do not submit a PC or EE statement, or if the statements have a lower rank than the STAT, then you will compete for a place on the basis of your STAT result only. Indigenous applicants may be eligible for entry through the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Access Scheme. See Wilto Yerlo for further information.
