Telecommunications engineers design, construct, maintain and upgrade telecommunications and data networks. The work of these engineers underpins modern communications including the Internet, mobile telephones, telephony and broadband networks, and international communications by satellite and optical fibre. Telecommunications Engineering students receive an education based in part on radio and optical communications technologies, and multimedia. Employment opportunities are available in telecommunications, Internet and related areas such as broadcasting and remote sensing. Telecommunications engineers also have expertise in the areas of network planning, distributed systems and databases, resource management, modelling and simulation, electronic and computer systems.
A combined degree for Telecommunications Engineering is available with the Bachelor of Arts (stream code 226).
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) is globally accepted as the program which provides most flexibility in study choices for students. The BA suits students who are interested in the big picture, finding answers to burning questions, understanding human behaviours, cultures and history, and exploring new or existing areas of study. Students specialise in areas of their choice by taking a 'major' (from one of 25 areas) and potentially a 'minor' (from a range of areas). This study plan gives students depth of knowledge and skills in a specialised field, while having breadth of understanding in other areas. *Students who have undertaken SACE Stage 2 Specialist Mathematics (or equivalent) will be required to enrol in MATHS 1011 Mathematics IA followed by MATHS 1012 Mathematics IB. Students who have not undertaken SACE Stage 2 Specialist Mathematics will be required to enrol in MATHS 1013 Mathematics IMA, then MATHS 1011 Mathematics IA in the following semester and then MATHS 1012 Mathematics IB in Summer Semester to complete the Mathematics requirements at Level I.
