Program Outline

The Bachelor of Social Sciences / Bachelor of Health Sciences is a combined degree program that is designed to provide a broad education for students interested in both the health sciences and social sciences. Students undertake core courses in both areas, and combine them with social science and health sciences electives in their area of interest. These complementary areas of study give students an understanding of the social structures and forces that affect health policy decisions and outcomes.
Graduates have the skills to consider health issues in the wider social context and to offer critical input into the development of public health policies and programs. The combined degrees provide a sound basis for postgraduate study in a number of areas, including graduate Medicine.

Students can present courses at level I and level II to both degrees, and present a separate level III for each degree, allowing them to complete both degrees in four years.
Program Structure

Students can complete the requirements of the Bachelor of Social Sciences and the Bachelor of Health Sciences and receive two degree parchments on completion of the four years of study. All students undertake a major sequence in public health and a major sequence in a social science discipline. Students will also have the option of taking an additional major sequence in health sciences and/or another social science (some overload may be required).

Selection Criteria

Year 12 applicants

You must not have completed more than 2 years full time equivalent university study (48 units). You compete for a place with your Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR).

Alternative entry pathways

Higher Education applicants
You must have completed at least half a year full time equivalent university study. A Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated for each separate program you have undertaken (apart from some double degree programs where the GPA is combined). You compete on the basis of your best GPA.
VET applicants
You must have completed a Certificate IV or above from a Registered Training Organisation. Your application will be ranked according to the level of the award.
Special Entry applicants
You must be 18 years or over before February 1st of the year that you will be studying. If you have studied a higher education program within the last two years, you must not have studied more than 2 years full-time equivalent in that program and you must not hold a completed higher education level award. If you meet this criteria, you will be ranked according to your result in the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). Your STAT result is not weighted between verbal and quantitative components. Personal Competencies (PC) and Employment Experience (EE) statements are not considered. Indigenous applicants may be eligible for entry through the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Access Scheme. See Wilto Yerlo for further information.

Areas of Specialisation
Bachelor of Health Sciences students must complete a major sequence from one of the following disciplinary areas:
- Anatomical Sciences, Pathology, Pharmacology, Psychology, Public Health, Medical Microbiology and Immunology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
  Interdisciplinary streams of Neuroscience and Reproductive Health
  Areas of study in the School of Molecular and Biomedical Sciences
Bachelor of Social Sciences students must also complete a major sequence from one of the following areas:
- Anthropology
- Asian Politics & Foreign Policy
- Asian studies
- Development studies
- Economics
- Gender, work and social inquiry
- Geographical and environmental studies
- History
- International studies
- Linguistics
- Philosophy
- Politics
- Psychology

4 x Level III or Advanced Level elective courses in Social Sciences 4 x Level III courses from Health Sciences or up to 12 units of Level III or Advanced Level courses offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Business School, the School of Economics, the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences or the Faculty of Sciences.

Please note that you must do a minimum of 9 units from a Health Sciences discipline to get your Major for Health Sciences.

The combined degrees prepare students for employment in a wide range of areas including writing policy, undertaking research, advising on health and social planning, organising clinical trials and promoting health initiatives to the community.
