This program introduces students to the theoretical foundation and skills for a career in counselling. An integrated series of four courses provides students with a broad knowledge base, professional preparation and an introduction the counselling and psychotherapy skills.
After successful completion of the Graduate Certificate in Counselling and Psychotherapy, students may wish to apply to further develop their skills and understanding through the Graduate Diploma or Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy. The clinical skills pathway of the Masters program has been designed to satisfy the training requirements for practitioners as outlined by the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) www.pacfa.org.au
The program is targeted at two distinct audiences:
The Counselling and Psychotherapy Program offers a unique combination of up-to-date theoretical knowledge and practical skills in counselling and psychotherapy. Theoretical perspectives are balanced by application of techniques and approaches, so that experiential and integrated learning results.
The program provides opportunity for reflection to enhance self-awareness as part of students’ professional formation, as counsellors use their personhood to relate to clients and work constructively with them.
Students will normally undertake coursework in Counselling and Psychotherapy Theories, professional practice (Ethics in the Workplace), developmental aspects of counselling (Attachment Across the Lifespan), and Counselling Skills.
Students may be permitted to substitute one or more of these courses with another from the first year of the Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy program (Overview of Mental Health, Nature of Grief, or Research Skills). Applicants with significant training and experience as counsellors may be permitted to choose courses from the second year of the program (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Trauma, Interpersonal Therapy and Narrative Therapy, Hypnosis or Counselling Applications: ACT and Mindfulness).
