Advancing Practice. Clinical Impact
The Graduate Certificate in Nursing Science (Apheresis Nursing) is an academic plan designed to enhance the theoretical base and clinical skills of the registered nurse who is working in the area of apheresis. The speciality of apheresis is dynamic and evolving and requires nurses to work at an advanced level. This program provides the opportunity for students to gain a deeper understanding of the assessment and management of patients undergoing apheresis procedures and the technology used. It aims to:
§ enhance the student’s knowledge of the diseases for which apheresis is required
§ enhance the student’s knowledge of apheresis technology and the principles underlying the application of skills in this speciality through the provision of appropriate readings and activities provide the student with the opportunity to build on knowledge already acquired
§ encourage the student to search the literature and become familiar with current research papers relating to apheresis nursing practice that can assist in supporting and evaluating the care provided for the donor or the patient undergoing apheresis procedures in a adult or paediatric setting.
- Program Structure
Apheresis Nursing I
Units: 6 units
Teaching Period: Semester 1 or 2
This course will examine the nursing and medical science underpinning therapeutic and donor apheresis. Topics will focus on the care and management of the patient/donor undergoing apheresis procedures and the recognition and treatment of common complications. The principles of basic haematology, coagulation and immunology will be reviewed. Machines and technical procedures, including the use of columns and filtration apheresis and photopheresis will be explored.
Apheresis Nursing II
Units: 6 units
Teaching Period: Semester 1 or 2 (Students should complete Apheresis Nursing I before undertaking Apheresis Nursing II).
This course will examine apheresis procedures with a focus on patient/donor centred related issues. Topics will include donor selection and management; patient care including the care of paediatric patients; the role of apheresis in bone marrow transplantation; collection of specific blood components by apheresis; validation of procedures and processes; and legal and professional issues. - Assessment
May include essays, case studies, discussion board participation, presentations, poster presentations, critiques, portfolios and exams.
