    Advancing Practice. Clinical Impact

    The Master of Nursing Science is an academic program designed to provide opportunities for nurses to develop advanced skills in clinical inquiry, practice and leadership in professional nursing.

    The Master of Nursing Science provides graduates with a rigorous grounding in research methods, critical analysis, clinical management and leadership and theoretical perspectives that inform nursing.

    Students will graduate with a sound knowledge of a broad range of research methodologies and methods; the ability to design and conduct a research project in a rigorous and ethical manner; the skills to critically evaluate research and make informed decisions for practice change when appropriate; the ability to work as an effective member of a research team; and be a critical and informed thinker regarding issues related to nursing and health.

  • Program Structure

    The Master of Nursing Science is structured in two stages:

    • Stage 1: Successful completion of the Graduate Diploma in Nursing Science (24 units of study)
    • Stage 2: Students are required to complete a total of 24 units of study for the Master of Nursing Science. Students are able to select one of two options: (1) Research; (2) Coursework.
  • Assessment

    May include essays, case studies, discussion board participation, presentations, poster presentations, research proposals and dissertation, portfolios, article for publication and exams.

    A completed Graduate Diploma in Nursing Science or equivalent and at least two years post registration nursing experience.

    Applicants must submit to the Discipline of Nursing a Curriculum Vitae along with an "Additional Information Request Form", downloaded from the website: www.health.adelaide.edu.au/nursing/students/future/programs/. This form should be submitted within ten working days after applying. Applicants must provide a Curriculum Vitae with the form.

    All students will be required to complete the following core courses:

    • Interpretive and Critical Research in Health (3 units)
    • Research Dissertation (Option 1) (12 units)

    OR

    • Systematic Review Project (Option 2) (6 units)

    And a combination of the following electives:

    • International Issues in Nursing Service Delivery (3 units)
    • Leadership and Management in Nursing (3 units)
    • Systematic Reviews of Research (3 units)
    • Applied Pharmacology in Nursing (3 units)
    • Research Literacy (3 units)
    • Introduction to Biostatistics (3 units)

    Stage 2 comprises 24 units and is undertaken over one year of full-time study or two years of part-time study.
