  • Program Outline

    This program is for students interested in the areas of science that relate to our Earth's mineral resources - their nature, origin, distribution, discovery and exploitation. This is the program for students who want an interesting, well-paid and diverse career, with the opportunities to travel to all parts of the world. The Bachelor of Science (Mineral Geoscience) integrates and extends courses in geology & geophysics, mining engineering, geography & environmental studies, chemistry, mathematics and physics. Key features of this program are extensive field-work. The need for skilled professionals in the geoscientific area has been well documented in the media.  The program is specifically designed to meet the need for high-calibre graduates in the mineral resources sector.  In addition, this program is strongly geared towards preparing students for entry into the Honours degree in Geology.

     

  • Program Structure
    The first year of this program provides a foundation in sciences such as geology and maths or statistics, with a choice of additional courses in chemistry, physics and science electives. Second year develops this foundation by providing more in-depth study in the areas of geology. In third year, students will focus on advanced topics including mineral exploration, tectonics and geophysics. Students will benefit from direct exposure to professionals in the mineral geoscience industry that will enable them to form mentoring relationships. An additional year of study is available for those wishing to obtain an Honours degree.

    Year 12 applicants
    You must not have completed more than 2 years full time equivalent university study (48 units). Applicants who have studied Geology 1 at the University of Adelaide (or equivalent) must have achieved at least a credit grade average for these courses. You compete for a place with your Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR).
    Prerequisites
    SACE Stage 2: any two Science subjects chosen from Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematical Methods, Mathematical Studies, Physics, Psychology or Specialist Mathematics (NB: only one Mathematics subject may be counted).

    IB: two Science subjects (minimum grade 4 for SL, 3 for HL); or, one Science subject plus Mathematics (minimum grade 4 for SL, 3 for HL)

    Alternative entry pathways
    • Higher Education applicants
      You must have completed at least half a year full time equivalent university study. Applicants who have studied Geology 1 at the University of Adelaide (or equivalent) must have achieved at least a credit grade average for these courses. A Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated for each separate program you have undertaken (apart from some double degree programs where the GPA is combined). You compete on the basis of your best GPA.
    • VET applicants
      You must have completed an AQF Certificate IV or above from a Registered Training Organisation. Your application will be ranked according to the level of the award. Applicants who have studied Geology 1 at the University of Adelaide (or equivalent) must have achieved at least a credit grade average for these courses.
    • Special Entry applicants
      You must be 18 years or over before February 1st of the year that you will be studying. If you have studied a higher education program within the last two years, you must not have studied more than 2 years full-time equivalent in that program and you must not hold a completed higher education level award. Applicants who have studied Geology 1 at the University of Adelaide (or equivalent) must have achieved at least a credit grade average for these courses. If you meet this criteria, you will be ranked according to your result in the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). Personal Competencies (PC) and Employment Experience (EE) statements may also contribute to your rank. Your STAT result is not weighted between verbal and quantitative components. If you submit a PC or EE statement, and one of these ranks higher than your STAT score, then the highest ranking statement will contribute 50% to your overall rank and the STAT will contribute the remaining 50%. If you do not submit a PC or EE statement, or if the statements have a lower rank than the STAT, then you will compete for a place on the basis of your STAT result only. Craig Barker

After the first year of a Bachelor of Science at the University of Adelaide, Craig Barker decided to pick up the subject of geology. From the first lecture he knew it was what he wanted to do. But what he didn’t know was that this decision would allow him to travel the world while getting paid for doing what he loves.

Craig currently works as the Geology Manager of the Chelopech Mine in Bulgaria where he manages the day-to-day activities involved in the exploration and mining of precious metals.
