    The Graduate Certificate in Nursing Science (Retrieval Nursing) provides advanced specialist training for nurses to participate in the retrieval of critically ill adult patients. Retrievals may be undertaken by road, rotary or fixed wing aircraft. Students within this program will already be qualified in critical care and practicing in a high acuity intensive care unit. The Graduate Certificate in Nursing Science (Retrieval Nursing) provides graduates with a rigorous grounding in principles and practices of retrieval nursing necessary to transport critically ill patients from diverse settings such as rural and remote hospitals, motor vehicle accident sites and international repatriations.

  • Program Structure

    Principles and Practices of Retrieval Nursing
    Units: 6 units
    Teaching period: Semester 1
    This course will present the principles of retrieval and physical and psycho-social needs of patients. Topics will include anatomy, physiology, psychosocial care, nursing care of retrieval patients and aeronautical medicine. International repatriation and retrieval of patients requiring hyperbaric treatment will also be considered. Students will be required to participate in supervised field experience in a level 3 intensive care unit for 150 hours.

    Trauma Nursing
    Units: 6 units
    Teaching period: Semester 2
    This course will examine nursing and medical science in relation to trauma, the principles of trauma nursing and the physical and psycho-social needs of those who experience trauma. Topics will include anatomy, physiology, psychosocial care, nursing care of trauma patients, principles of early management of severe trauma (EMST) and the teaching/learning process in patient education. Students will be required to participate in supervised field experience in a level 3 intensive care unit for 150 hours and participate as an active team member in a minimum of five retrievals.

    Graduate entry only.
    Applicants must:
    1. be registered, or be eligible for registration, as a nurse in Australia or New Zealand, and 2. hold a degree of Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent; or, have at least two years experience as a registered nurse in the field of the specialisation to be undertaken, and 3. satisfactorily complete an appropriate medical examination on Occupational Health and Safety grounds for specialisation in Retrieval Nursing.

    This academic specialisation is restricted to candidates with an approved qualification and recent experience in intensive care nursing.
