    Concern about climate change, loss of biodiversity and water shortages is leading to the rapid growth in markets for accurate, low cost environmental monitoring tools. Government agencies responsible for reporting on the performance of their environmental programs, or who need to monitor compliance with environmental regulations, require managers who understand the technical options that are available to them. Businesses need solutions to meet their legislative obligations and there is a ready and growing market for lower cost monitoring solutions that make use of the latest technological platforms. Engineering companies need technical professionals who can lead development programs in this area.

    The University of Adelaide is a world leader in many areas of Environmental Monitoring. With the newly formed Environment Institute, as well as cutting edge research into micro-structured fibre optics for environmental sensing and computer analysis of video imagery, it is an ideal place to study.

    It is envisaged that this program will help create the next generation of companies and entrepreneurs that will lead this emerging industry.

  • Program Structure
    Core courses cover diverse disciplines such as ecology, engineering and geology thereby providing students with a grounding in, and appreciation of, the multidisciplinary nature of environmental monitoring technologies. To expand on this, students can take electives in a number of thematic areas including marketing and commercialisation, sensing and modelling, quality measurement and environmental physics, with choices available within each theme. The Graduate Diploma consists of 24 units of study.

  • Study Plans

    The study plans given are examples of pathways through this degree for students that commenced their program in 2013 (refer to the program rules). Students that commenced in previous years should refer to the tabs above(referring to years) or consult their Faculty for advice.

    All candidates shall complete the following core courses:

    Elective Courses

    All candidates shall complete elective courses to the value of 12 units as follows:

    (i) passes to the value of 6 units from the following areas of study

    And an additional 3 units chosen from (ii) below

    (ii) or passes in additional courses to the value of 6 units from the following areas of study

    Environment

    Physics of Environmental Monitoring*

    *Students undertaking courses in the Physics of Environmental Monitoring theme need to have passes in APP MATH 2000 and APP MATH 2002 or MATHS 2201 and MATHS 2202 or equivalent knowledge.

    Additionally, candidates may select other elective courses chosen from programs offered by the University, subject to prior approval of the Program Coordinator.  Candidates should note that courses offered in the Graduate Diploma of Environmental Monitoring Technologies are subject, at all times, to availability.
