Please Note: The Graduate Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical) is an exit award only. If you wish to commence the Master of Engineering (Mechanical), please view the related program information. If you are currently enrolled in the Master of Engineering (Mechanical) and wish to exit with the Graduate Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical), see the academic requirements for this degree.
Mechanical engineering is concerned with the management of people and resources, the creation and use of new technologies and the design and development of new processes and products. This mostly involves 'things that move', such as motor vehicles, aircraft systems, engines, pumps, gas turbines, industrial plants, air conditioning/refrigeration systems, manufacturing processes, building services and even space stations.
With a strong focus on design, graduates can obtain the knowledge of design and engineering sciences through courses such as heat transfer and thermodynamics, dynamics and control, structural design and solid mechanics as well as a range of advanced technical coursework in specialist topics.
This 24-unit program includes 9 units of core courses comprising statistics, system modelling, and management and is designed to provide generic skills applicable across all fields of engineering. The remaining 15 units are discipline specific courses providing additional technical material at a level beyond that of a first engineering degree.
This degree offers candidates the chance to specialise in cutting-edge technologies aligned to their career pathways. It is suitable for engineering graduates with Honours who wish to pursue further studies, as well as engineers with relevant work experience. Successful candidates may articulate to the Master of Engineering. The Graduate Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical) is a 24-unit program, suitable for engineering graduates who wish to pursue further studies, as well as engineers with relevant work experience (up to 12 additional units of enabling courses may be required depending on the exact nature of the applicant's qualifications - this may extend study by one semester).
The program includes 9 units of core courses designed to provide generic skills in statistics, numerical analysis and project management, which are applicable across all fields of engineering.
