This program prepares students for a career in counselling by introducing them to the theoretical foundation and practical skills required. It offers a unique combination of up-to-date theoretical knowledge and practical skills in counselling and psychotherapy. Theoretical perspectives are balanced by application of techniques and approaches, resulting in experiential and integrated learning results.
Students must also allow up to two and a half days each week for a Counselling placement in their second year of study (or equivalent). A research pathway that provides a suitable background for PhD candidacy is also available.
The clinical skills pathway has been designed to meet the training requirements for practitioners as outlined by the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA).
Students complete 7 core courses in Counselling and Psychotherapy and may choose from the following options:
Option 1: Clinical practice pathway
Students complete 5 prescribed courses in this option and 2 elective courses in thematic areas in Counselling and Psychotherapy.
Option 2: Research pathway
Students complete 3 prescribed courses in this option, 2 elective courses in thematic areas in Counselling and Psychotherapy and a research thesis in Counselling and Psychotherapy of not longer than 12,000 words.
Case reports, presentations, quizzes and written assignments and may include counselling placements or a research thesis.

Satisfactory completion of the Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy.
Applicants will be required to submit a CV/resume and a 500 word statement outlining their motivation for undertaking the program. Applicants should forward their statement and resume (including their SATAC reference number) to: Counselling and Psychotherapy Program Coordinator, Discipline of General Practice, University of Adelaide, SA 5005 or email to Jacqui.Howard@adelaide.edu.au.
Applicants will also be required to participate in an interview with academic staff members from the Discipline of General Practice.
The Discipline will undertake an additional review before granting progression to the second year of the program.

The clinical pathway of the Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy has been designed to meet the training requirements for counselling practitioners as outlined by the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA). This enables graduates to apply for registration with the Counselling Association of South Australia and for registration with PACFA.
Students undertaking the clinical practice pathway are required to allow up to two and a half days each week for counselling placements; providing students with supervised practical experience in counselling and psychotherapy.
