  • Program Outline

    The program is designed to provide specialisation in the related fields of health economics, health policy and health care management with a particular focus on international health systems. Graduates will develop the capacity to design health reform programs, analyse policy effectiveness, perform economic evaluations of health care interventions, and identify challenges for policy implementation and governance issues by combining management skills with a sound knowledge of economics and public health policies.

    The flexible structure of the program allows students to tailor their studies according to their educational background or career aspirations, focussing on the economic, health policy or management aspects of health care delivery and planning in countries at different stages of development.

  • Program Structure

    The program consists of course work comprising core courses in the areas of Health Economics and Policy, Economic Methods, Public Policy and Management, and electives in the areas above or other approved courses offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences or the Faculty of the Professions. Students with at least a Distinction average may also choose to complete a dissertation on a research project.

    Applicants who have completed the Graduate Certificate in Economics may be granted credit towards the Master of Health Economics and Policy.

  • Areas of Specialisation

    The choice of electives allows students to tailor their program according to their educational background and career aspirations. In addition to a generalist track, there are three options for specialisation in:

    • health management
    • health technologies
    • development economics

    Students who have achieved a Distinction average in the 8 core courses may undertake the following options:

    • PUB HLTH 7119 Dissertation in Health Economics and Policy (full time)
    • PUB HLTH 7120 Dissertation in Health Economics and Policy (part time)

    * These courses are available for students with an appropriate level of mathematical and statistical background.
