- Program Outline
The Master of Nursing Science (Cardiac Nursing) is designed to develop advanced theoretical knowledge and specialist skills essential for the registered nurse to proficiently assess and manage adult patients admitted to hospital with acute and chronic cardiac conditions.
The foundation courses in cardiac nursing focus on the pathophysiology, patient assessment, monitoring, investigations and management of the patient with cardiac disease and on the acquisition of practical skills necessary to care for critically ill cardiac patients. Graduates will have a comprehensive knowledge of the medical and surgical cardiac patient and be equipped to care for patients admitted to the following; medical cardiology units, interventional cardiology units, cardiothoracic surgical units and cardiac catheterisation laboratories.
Students have the option to structure their program to focus their knowledge and skill acquisition on specialised cardiac skills including coronary care, interventional cardiology and heart failure management through the selection of an elective in semester II.
- Program Structure
The program is structured in two stages:
Stage 1
Students must complete the courses as outlined under the study plan to exit with the Graduate Diploma in Nursing Science (Cardiac Nursing).
Stage 2
With an additional one year of fulltime study, students can complete this program by Research or Coursework. Refer to the study plan below.

Graduate entry only.Applicants must: 1. be registered, or be eligible for registration, as a nurse in Australia or New Zealand, and 2. hold a degree of Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent; or, have at least two years experience as a registered nurse in the field of the specialisation to be undertaken.All applicants must ensure they correctly answer the question relating to Nursing current practising certificate when applying on GradStart. SATAC will attempt to confirm their registration on the online register of the relevant Nurses Board but if SATAC is unable to do so, applicants will be asked to submit a certified copy of their certificate.

Applicants must provide a Curriculum Vitae. Students studying the Master of Nursing Science (Stage 1)/ Graduate Diploma in a specialty will need to be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and working in a relevant clinical setting (except for Evidence Based Practice). Enrolment in Stage 1 of the Master of Nursing Science in a particular specialty is contingent on the School of Nursing securing a clinical placement. Successful completion of the program does not qualify graduates to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
